Kathy Dearmin settled her lawsuit just weeks before it was scheduled to go to trial in Bradenton. According to the suit, in September 2003, a commercial hauling truck ran a red light and struck the passenger side of Dearmin’s car. Dearmin was taken to a hospital and was in a coma for five weeks, her attorney said.

Today, Dearmin requires the assistance of a live-in caretaker and is undergoing speech and behavioral therapy.

Dearmin’s lawsuit named the truck's driver and its owner as defendants. Her attorney said the majority of the settlement money was put into an annuity to gain interest so that Dearmin could receive monthly payments to help cover the cost of the medical treatment she will need for the rest of her life.
