Attorneys for Roland Leo Grenier Sr., 79, said their client was exposed to asbestos through automobile products such as braking and clutching mechanisms manufactured by GM and Ford. Grenier has been diagnosed with a deadly cancer known as mesothelioma, which can take years or decades to surface after asbestos exposure.
The jury heard how Grenier was exposed to asbestos for almost 35 years while he worked as an auto mechanic and laborer in the Pawtucket, Rhode Island, area. The three week trial concluded after the jury deliberated for a total of 10 hours over two days.
In rendering their decision, the jurors attributed 70 percent of the liability to General Motors, 16 percent to Ford, and 2 percent to 7 other defendants.
