The driver, Sean Logullo, was 16 at the time of the accident in June 2004. Although Matey's parents filed the lawsuit against Logullo, his parents, and Ford, the jury held Logullo 100 percent responsible, exonerating both his parents and Ford.

In the accident, the Sport Trak rolled and struck a tree, and Matey incurred severe head injuries that left him permanently and significantly impaired.

The $31 million award is comprised of about $19 million for damages including past and future healthcare expenses, household services and lost wages, and about $12 million for "non-economic damages" to Jess Matey and his parents. Logullo's father, Mark Logullo, noted that the liability insurance on the vehicle is only $50,000.
