County officials acknowledged that the man's lawsuit had been settled, but could not provide additional information.
According to the suit, on June 4, 2001, Bradley Rowand, of Alloway Township, was riding his 1998 Suzuki motorcycle on Woodstown Road County Road 605 in Woolwich Township. The 20-year-old Rowand was riding with three of his friends and was in the lead when he struck a pothole and was sent flying from his motorcycle. He crashed into a metal pole at the side of the road, which took his leg off at the hip, his attorney, Mati Jarve, said.
Rowand spent 62 days in a hospital and underwent several surgeries. Doctors fitted him with a prosthesis, but he has been unable to use it due to problems with scar tissue. Rowand relies on a wheelchair to get around, but expects to be able to walk again one day, Jarve said.
Rowand’s lawsuit charged that the road on which the accident occurred should have been repaired long ago. Instead, the county simply used cold patch on occasion to fill the potholes, Jarve said.
Since the accident, the road has been paved with asphalt.
