At about 9:30 pm on the night of March 25, David Ross, 21, Russ Broughton, 20, and Lloyd Holze, 20, all from Hampshire, Illinois, were each riding a motorcycle on Powers Road in unincorporated Rutland Township in northern Illinois' Kane County. They apparently collided while going around a curve in the road, and all three were thrown from their bikes. Holze was seriously injured and eventually airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, with severe head injuries; he was described as still being "in extreme critical condition" on March 27. The other two men were examined and released with minor injuries.

It is not known whether the three men were wearing motorcycle helmets at the time of the accident, which is still under investigation. The speed at which they were traveling has also not been revealed. Local police noted that it's not unusual for them to see a spike in motorcycle accidents in the springtime, when motorcyclists who have not ridden their bikes all winter are reacquainting themselves with motorcycle riding.
