Justin Meyers, 19, of Sutter Creek, was in a truck with two other friends when the accident occurred. Carl Littlefield, 17, and Jason Backer, 17, lost their lives when Littlefield’s Ford Ranger was unable to negotiate a turn off of Climax Road onto the Highway 88 outlet in Amador County. The vehicle, traveling at excessive speed, sped over the embankment and landed on its roof 40 feet below on the shoulder of the highway. Meyers suffered a broken back and extensive nerve damage in the accident.
The lawsuit claims that Meyers, now a paraplegic, will suffer substantial damages related to lifelong treatment and rehabilitation, and that his condition will keep him from the benefits of future educational and employment opportunities.
The lawsuit alleges that Amador County was negligent in its design, construction, and maintenance of the interchange at Climax Road and Highway 88, claiming the curve did not meet the county’s own standards of design.
Also named in the suit is Daniel Wurzburger, Littlefield’s step-father and the registered owner of the Ford Ranger.
