Rudolph Jones died a year ago on May 16, 2006.

His son, Rudolph Jones Jr., of Fairview Heights, filed the lawsuit last week and in it is seeking $250,000 in compensatory, punitive, and exemplary damages. He is represented by Randy Gori and Allyson Romani of Goldenberg, Heller, Antognoli, Rowland, Short and Gori of Edwardsville.

Named as defendants in the suit are Atlantic Richfield Co., BP Amoco Chemical Co., Cerro Copper, Dow Chemical, DuPont, General Motors, Radiator Specialty, Shell Chemical Co., Shell Oil Co., Sherwin-Williams Co., Testor Corp., Turtle Wax Inc., Union Oil Co. of California, US Steel Corp., and U.S. Paint.

Rudolph senior worked as a welder, laborer, and steel worker for 40 years in Granite City beginning in 1963.

Jones Jr. claims that his father was unnecessarily exposed to benzene by the defendant companies, who either sold, designed, manufactured, or distributed benzene-containing products.

Benzene is a cancer-causing, aromatic substance naturally contained in gasoline, crude oil, and cigarette smoke, and is also found in products derived from coal and petroleum.
