Robert Finke, a former National Steel employee, was diagnosed with silicosis two years ago – a disease he claims resulted from hazardous inhalation of silica dust on the job. Fink claims the defendants did not adequately warn him of the dangerous nature of working with silica, and failed to provide proper safety equipment, protective gear, warning signs, and instructions for safe handling of the mineral.
Citing pain and suffering from his battle with silicosis, Finke is seeking compensation for alleged disfigurement caused by the disease, as well as medical expenses and loss of future wages.
Silicosis is a progressive lung disease caused by the inhalation of small particles of silica. Symptoms often take 10-15 years to develop and include shortness of breath, severe cough, bluish skin, weight loss, and formation of scar tissue in the lungs. There is a high occurrence of silicosis among miners, sandblasters, stonecutters, foundry workers, and other people exposed to silica dust.
The case is pending in Madison County Circuit Court.
