On June 25, 2005, Joseph L. Garcia and five other passengers were riding the bus west on Santa Monica Boulevard when the accident occurred. All six were hurt, but Garcia suffered the most severe injuries, including brain damage and paralysis in the left side of his body.

Garcia's attorney, Browne Greene, filed the lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. In it he sought $40 million.

The jury delivered its verdict June 7, after deliberating for a day.

Rick Jager, a spokesman for the MTA, said the agency would not appeal the verdict. He said the MTA maintained from the beginning of the case that it was willing to pay Garcia's medical expenses.

According to Greene, prior to the start of the trial, the MTA attempted to settle the case for $5 million.
