According to the Justice Department, DuPont agreed to spend $66 million to clean up the emissions from its sulfuric acid plant in Burnside, Louisiana, and either cease operations or spend some $87 million to cut pollution at the Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky plants by the year 2012.
Additionally, DuPont will pay $4.1 million in fines under the Clean Air Act.
The company-wide plan to reduce emissions is expected to influence other sulfuric acid producers to adopt similar measures in curbing pollution.
Sulfuric acid is used in the production of many products, including soaps, paper, fertilizers and other everyday products.
