Louie Fittz and his wife Ophelia named 16 companies, including American Optical Corp., Viacom, and General Electric, in a lawsuit that alleges the defendants negligently exposed Fittz to asbestos and failed to warn him of the dangers of working with the toxic chemical.

Fittz worked as a pipe fitter and welder at various plants for two decades, when, according to the suit, he was required to handle large quantities of asbestos manufactured and sold by the defendants. Fittz was diagnosed with an unspecified malignant asbestos-related disease earlier this year, according to the suit.

Fittz and his wife are suing for pain and suffering, loss of future earnings, and medical expenses.
