Sponsored by Sen. Patty Murray, the Ban Asbestos in America Act would prohibit all manufacturing, processing, and distribution of asbestos-containing products within two years after it becomes law. The chlorine industry would be given three years to phase out asbestos from their manufacturing activities.

The bill would also set aside $50 million for research and treatment activities related to asbestos. Asbestos exposure is known to cause various forms of cancer, including mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs. Approximately 3,000 Americans die from mesothelioma every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

After being sidetracked by lawmakers for the past five years, the bill was unanimously approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Sen. Arlen Specter criticized the measure for not including any provisions on asbestos litigation.

However, the bill is expected to draw support from both parties. If approved by the Senate, the bill would likely land on President Bush’s desk later this year.
