The verdict is one of the largest lawsuit awards in the state's history.

In September 2005 Ralph Currier, 21, was riding in a car being driven by Taylor Quinn of Woodstock when the vehicle left the road and crashed into a house and veterinary clinic. Quinn had been driving in excess of 100 mph, according to the lawsuit.

Currier suffered severe injuries in the crash and may be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Judge Theresa DiMauro noted in her decision that the accident has left Currier dependent on others for his most basic needs.

Currier's lawsuit named Quinn's mother, Suzanne Schipper, as the defendant, accusing her of negligently entrusting her car to Quinn.

The $21 million verdict includes nearly $1 million for Currier's current medical expenses, $15 million for future medical expenses, nearly $1 million for future lost earnings, and $5 million for pain and suffering.

As a result of the accident, Quinn faced criminal charges and served 10 months in prison for gross negligent operation of a motor vehicle with serious injury resulting, said Windsor County State's Attorney Robert Sand.
