The suit alleges that the act of throwing money into the crowd, known as “making it rain” in rap circles, directly caused the crowd surge that resulted in Layne’s injuries.

The then 17-year-old college freshman sustained a serious closed head injury that led to hospitalization, memory loss, loss of concentration, and severe headaches, according to the complaint, filed in Baltimore Circuit Court on Tuesday.

The lawsuit names Lil’ Wayne, whose given name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Universal Records Inc., Cash Money Records Inc., and Young Money Touring Inc. as defendants. Layne is suing for $1 million.

Lil’ Wayne was the opening act for fellow rapper Busta Rhymes at the concert, during which two other women were injured by the crowd frenzy, according to reports published at the time.
