State officials ordered residents of a complex on North Sheridan Road to evacuate Thursday after a subcontractor disturbed insulation from within the walls during renovation work to convert the apartments into condominiums. The insulation was later confirmed to contain asbestos.
Asbestos inhalation can cause various forms of lung disease, including a rare type of lung cancer known as mesothelioma. Kimberly Parker from the state health department said the evacuation was necessary to protect the health of the tenants.
Now, the property owner must find an approved asbestos removal company to clean up the building.
Residents will not be allowed back in the 20-plus story complex until air test results indicate that the apartments are safe, according to a flier from the building's management office.
A statement released by the management company on Friday said that efforts are being made to find temporary housing for all tenants.
Renovations to the building are scheduled to be completed within the next month; however, it is not certain when the work will be approved by the government.
