Pharmaceutical giant Wyeth will be forced to pay a total of $99 million in punitive damages to the women, whose ages range from 65 to 74.
The punitive damages were awarded to the defendants one week after they received an original $35 million settlement in the case. In the punitive stage of the trial, the jury found that the additional $99 million was necessary to punish Wyeth and hold it responsible for distributing the drugs.
A partner in the law firm representing Wyeth responded that the verdict was not consistent with the evidence involving Premarin and Prempro, the two drugs in question. During the trial, Wyeth lawyers argued that the FDA-approved drugs could not be definitively linked to the women's cancer and that other factors could have led to its development.
Currently there are over 5,000 similar lawsuits in the United States against Wyeth.
