Some passengers were also injured, but their conditions are unknown.

Amtrak train No. 371 crashed into the back of the Norfolk Southern freight train; no one on the freight train was injured.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, it is unclear why the two trains were on the same track.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern says the freight train was stopped on the track and waiting to receive the go-ahead to proceed when the Amtrak train struck it from behind.

The Amtrak train was en route to Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the time of the crash.
