Introduced by State Senator Rosalind Kurita, the bill seeks to increase the number of counties that may send dog attack cases to General Sessions Court.

Under the current law, these cases are sent to a circuit court judge, who may impose a maximum fine of $50. A General Sessions Court judge can impose higher fines and order a dog destroyed.

Kurita hopes that approval of the bill will encourage dog owners to be more responsible with their pets.

According to David Selby, animal control director for Montgomery County, last year there were 292 reported dog bites in Montgomery County alone.
