Connecticut Jury Awards $38 Million in Medical Malpractice Case

The $38 million awarded to the boy's family is believed to be one of the largest ever given in a malpractice case. The bulk of the amount is intended to cover past and future medical care, with the rest awarded for pain and suffering on the part of the child and the parents.

The obstetrician was accused of not ordering a Caesarean section quickly enough after the umbilical cord had allegedly impeded blood flow to the infant's brain during delivery.

The boy will require lifetime care.

The obstetrician's attorney will reportedly ask the judge in the case to set the verdict aside.

The hospital was found not liable.
