Pet Owners Fight Legislation Banning Breeds

The bill, drafted by Rep. John Lesch, seeks to ban Akitas, Chow Chows, pit bulls, Rottweilers and wolf hybrids.

According to the veterinary program director at North Dakota State University, Tom Colville, the bill would not effectively address the problem of dangerous dogs. He places the blame for dog bites on owners, rather than on dogs. Uneducated owners often do not sufficiently train and socialize their dogs, he says.

Sheila Aman, training director of the F-M Kennel Club, claims that dogs that bite often have been abused. She, too, feels that if owners adequately socialized their dogs, a ban on certain breeds would be unnecessary.
