According to police reports, as the woman was playing with the dogs in her boyfriend’s backyard, they suddenly turned vicious and began fighting with each other, prompting her to intervene.

It took the boyfriend and a neighbor with a garden hose to pull the dogs off.

After the woman and her boyfriend were treated for dog bites at Wilcox Hospital, the boyfriend asked that the dogs be put down. They were euthanized Monday morning, according to Dr. Becky Rhoades, director of the Kauai Humane Society.

The woman, whose identity has yet to be revealed by police, had helped her 45-year-old boyfriend raise the dogs from the time they were puppies, said Rhoades.

Humane Society officials claim that until the woman’s attack, they hadn’t received any reports indicating that the dogs had acted aggressively toward anyone.
