Milwaukee police are looking for the parents of an abandoned infant found Monday morning on Milwaukee's Northwest Side. Authorities believe the infant, a baby girl, to be approximately two days old.
A local couple found the infant in a diaper bag on the trunk of their car around 8 o'clock in the morning. The husband, assuming the diaper bag contained items dropped off for his own grandchild, set the bag aside. He asked his wife to examine the bag later. When she did, she discovered the child, wrapped in blankets.
Authorities are reminding locals of the state's "safe haven law", which allows anyone to surrender an infant within 72 hours of its birth without penalty. This law allows persons to drop off newborns at designated locations: hospitals, police or fire stations, and sheriff's offices.
Authorities have released the infant's picture, and they are asking anyone with information on the girl's parents to contact local police.
