Verizon Asks Judge to Rule Its Wireless Network "Most Reliable"

Wireless phone providers Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility LLC (a division of AT&T) are engaged in a dispute over the accuracy of claims in Verizon's advertising. This week, Verizon filed a suit asked a judge to rule that ads casting its 3G network as "America's best" and "America's most reliable" are truthful and accurate.

AT&T had previously filed challenges with the Council for Better Business Bureaus disputing that characterization. According to AT&T's own calculations, its 3G network is the more reliable of the two. The company argues that speed should be included in any calculation of reliability.

Verizon became the largest mobile phone carrier in the United States this year after it absorbed Alltel Corp. in January, passing AT&T. However, AT&T - exclusive provider of the popular iPhone - has added more new customers so far this year than Verizon. Last quarter, AT&T added 1.4 million customers to 1.1 million for Verizon.
