A program that provides at least $5 million in recovery money to Louisiana homeowners with defective Chinese drywall launches this month. The Louisiana Recovery Authority approved the plan in order to assist those struggling with defective drywall sent from China in 2004 and 2005.
According to Louisiana state senator, A.G. Crowe, the $5 million is a separate allocation of funds intended to assist those still struggling with reconstruction after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Further, Crowe maintains that there is a good chance that this amount will increase.
The program targets low- and medium-income families, with emphasis on those living in trailers issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Those who previously qualified for Road Home assistance, as well as those that did not previously participate will be included in the program.
Due to the overwhelming response, additional meetings are being scheduled to educate residents on the program and how to participate. Residents were previously informed that they can expect to receive a break on their property tax bill this year since the Louisiana Tax Commission allowed assessors to reduce home values on those affected by tainted drywall.
