Recognizing Fluoroquinolone Brand Names

Fluoroquinolone is a family of synthetic antibiotics that prevent bacterial DNA from unwinding and duplicating. Levaquin, Cipro, and Avelox are the three leading brands of drugs that belong to the fluoroquinolone family of drugs, which are prescribed to treat bacterial infections.
Levaquin
Levaquin is manufacturered by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Inc. and is used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections.
Cipro
Cipro is manufactured by Bayer and is used to treat infections of the urinary tract such as acute uncomplicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, and chronic bacterial prostatitis. Cipro is also used to treat ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and some sexually transmitted diseases, among other conditions.
Avelox
Avelox is also manufactured by Bayer and is used to treat bacterial infection that contribute to acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. Avelox is also used to treat skin and skin structure infections and intra-abdominal infections caused by certain bacteria.
