Personal injury and wrongful death suits are stacking up against Bayer Health Care Pharmaceuticals over its YAZ® and YASMIN® oral contraceptives, most blaming the pills for dangerous blood clots. There are already more than 100 and observers are suggesting there may eventually be thousands.
The U.S. Judiciary Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has consolidated dozens of federal cases in the District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, under Chief Judge David R. Herndon. New Jersey Assignment Judge Donald Volkert, Jr., has asked that all cases in his state be heard by a single judge as a mass tort. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Sandra Mazer Moss has consolidated all cases filed in her city.
New YAZ®/YASMIN® Cases Across the Country
A quick search of the Internet yields numerous articles about new YAZ®/YASMIN® lawsuits being filed in jurisdictions across the country.
Plaintiffs are alleging that Bayer was negligent in not warning them that drospirenone, the progestin used only in YAZ®, YASMIN®, and the generic Ocella®, is more likely to cause blood clots than progestins in other contraceptives. The results of a study published in the British Medical Journal support that view.
Study Shows Elevated Danger from YAZ®/YASMIN® Progestin
Among a sample of more than 5,000 women treated for blood clots, those taking any progestin were at least four times more likely to suffer dangerous blood clots than those not using contraceptives. The likelihood increased to six times for those taking drospirenone.
Some plaintiffs say they would have chosen another contraceptive if Bayer had disclosed the elevated blood clot risk.
If you or a loved one has been injured or killed by a blood clot after taking YAZ® or YASMIN®, you should take your case to an experienced personal injury or wrongful death attorney. Financial compensation won't turn back the clock on what you've endured, but it will help you with expenses incurred and replace lost income. The best way to get what you deserve is to have a good attorney fighting for you.
