Parkinson's Drug Mirapex Linked to Narcolepsy-like Spontaneous Sleeping

The makers of the prescription drug Mirapex® (pramipexole dihydrochloride) are warning that it may cause those taking it to suddenly and unexpectedly fall asleep while performing routine activities, including driving. The chronic neurological disorder narcolepsy also causes spontaneous sleeping. While it has not been established that Mirapex® can cause narcolepsy, the result is the same, and is just as potentially dangerous.
Mirapex® is most commonly prescribed for relief of Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms, including involuntary tremors, stiffness, and difficulty in moving. Another application is the relief of restless leg syndrome (RLS).
Narcolepsy Still Not Fully Understood
True narcolepsy is still somewhat of a medical mystery. It is thought to be a genetically inherited condition triggered by a virus or other environmental causes. Other symptoms include loss of muscle control, hallucinations, and difficulty sleeping at night.
Mirapex® maker Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BIP), advises patients considering using the drug to consult a doctor if they use alcohol or any medication that may cause drowsiness. Ironically, both sleepiness and difficulty falling asleep are listed as possible side effects. Others include nausea, dizziness, involuntary movement, and constipation.
Compulsive Behaviors Listed Among Side Effects
Compulsive behaviors are also listed as possible Mirapex® side effects, including gambling, shopping, eating, and increased sexual urges. BIP has lost one lawsuit over compulsive gambling claims by a man with no previous history of gambling problems; it may face hundreds more.
If you or someone you know has taken Mirapex® and suffered spontaneous sleeping, compulsive behavior, or other detrimental side effects, contact an experienced defective products attorney right away. Falling asleep while driving could cause a serious accident. Compulsive behavior, especially gambling and binge shopping, can ruin your financial status. Other compulsions could endanger your health or your personal relationships. You may need financial compensation to recover your losses or obtain the help you need.
