Connecticut Asbestos Information

The State of Connecticut has a strong manufacturing tradition. Historically, Connecticut is well known for producing military weaponry, dating back to the revolutionary war. The state's factories still manufacture defense products, in addition to a number of other goods. While manufacturing has been vital to Connecticut's economy, the prevalence of heavy industry can present certain drawbacks. Many industrial worksites contain hazardous materials like asbestos. Exposure to asbestos can eventually lead to such occupational diseases as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Internal documents have shown that, while most employers were aware of the dangers posed by asbestos, many did not take adequate measures to protect workers from exposure to this carcinogen. Years later, individuals continue to be diagnosed with diseases caused by previous contact with asbestos.

Connecticut Asbestos Claims: Raymark Industries, Inc.

Raymark Industries, Inc., is just one example of a Connecticut company that produced toxic waste for decades. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) investigated Raymark in the 1990s. The agencies found that Raymark, a manufacturer of brake linings and other automotive products containing asbestos, was using a series of lagoons to capture asbestos dust, lead waste and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) created during the manufacturing process. The lagoons were dredged periodically, and the hazardous waste was put into landfills at various locations in Stratford, Connecticut. The agencies determined that the Raymark facility site was contaminated, as were over forty residential properties nearby. Individuals who worked at or lived near the Raymark plant likely have a significantly higher risk for developing asbestos-related diseases.
