Connecticut Mesothelioma Information
Heavy industry, particularly manufacturing, has been central to Connecticut's economy throughout the state's history. During the American Revolution, firearms and ammunition were produced in Connecticut. Military defense production is still critical to the state's economy. Connecticut factories continue to produce guns and ammunition, in addition to submarines, jet engines, aircraft parts, helicopters, bearings, electronics, optical instruments, and hardware for advanced weaponry. Other state manufactures include sewing machines, tools, cutlery, clocks, locks, and silverware. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 495 people in Connecticut died from mesothelioma and asbestosis according to the federal government. These records do not include deaths from lung cancer caused by asbestos, which some estimates place at 5,000 to 10,000 per year nationwide. Furthermore, mesothelioma was often misdiagnosed in the past, and the federal government did not even officially track mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999 (at which point reported mesothelioma deaths more than doubled). This suggests that many deaths caused by mesothelioma went unreported, and the total number of deaths caused by asbestos is likely much higher than the figures provided by the federal government.
