Florida Asbestos Information

While tourism and agriculture are the mainstays of the Florida economy, mining and manufacturing are also significant. Florida mines produce 25 percent of the world's phosphate, much of which is used for fertilizer. Manufacturing grew in importance in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as military installations were increasingly being used for the space program. The presence of space operations at locations like Cape Canaveral helped bring related hi-tech industries to Florida. Manufacturing, particularly of electronics, became important to the state's economy during this period. However, industries such as manufacturing and mining often involved working with asbestos products. When asbestos-containing materials are cut, sanded, or otherwise processed, carcinogenic asbestos dust is released. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can eventually lead to occupational diseases like mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. While many employers were aware of the dangers posed by asbestos, some did not take adequate measures to protect their employees from exposure. Decades later, individuals continue to be diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases.

Florida Asbestos Claims: W.R. Grace Company

The federal government recently conducted an investigation into the actions of a company that shipped over 100,000 tons of vermiculite ore to Florida between 1948 and 1993. The raw vermiculite, which was shipped from a W.R. Grace Company mine in Libby, Montana to locations in Tampa, Pompano Beach, Jacksonville, and Boca Raton, was contaminated with asbestos. At processing plants, the vermiculite ore was "exfoliated," which released large quantities of asbestos dust. Airborne asbestos fibers permeated these worksites and likely contaminated nearby communities. Individuals who worked in or lived near such vermiculite processing facilities may have an increased risk of developing diseases caused by asbestos exposure.

In early 2008, the W.R. Grace Company reached a tentative settlement for all current and future asbestos-related claims. Individuals who worked at or lived near the W.R. Grace processing plants may be eligible for compensation under the proposed settlement.
