Georgia Asbestos Information
The State of Georgia has a diverse and growing economic base. Although agriculture remains central to the economy, the manufacturing and mining industries have become increasingly important. In the course of building Georgia's industrial infrastructure, some workers were exposed to hazardous materials. In the mid to late twentieth century, asbestos-containing products and materials were used in many applications in the manufacturing and construction industries. For unprotected individuals, asbestos exposure can eventually lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis. Since these diseases often take decades to develop, many workers did not realize the dangers posed by asbestos. Tragically, many employers knew about the hazards of asbestos exposure, but failed to take measures to protect employees. Many years later, individuals continue to be diagnosed with such incurable illnesses.
Georgia Asbestos Claims: W.R. Grace Company
One example of such past negligence can be seen in the actions of the W.R. Grace Company. This company mined vermiculite, a mineral used for insulation or as a planting medium, in Libby, Montana. The raw vermiculite, which was contaminated with asbestos, was shipped to many locations across the nation. Approximately 346 tons of contaminated vermiculite was shipped to five Georgia locations between 1948 and 1993. Upon arrival, the vermiculite ore was processed for commercial use. Contained asbestos fibers were released during processing, exposing plant workers. Many of these processing plants produced so much asbestos dust that surrounding communities were affected. Individuals who worked in or lived near a W.R. Grace Company facility have an increased risk for developing diseases caused by asbestos exposure.
