Kentucky Mesothelioma/Asbestos
The public has been aware of the dangers of asbestos since the 1970s; unfortunately, since the use of this naturally occurring material was so widespread before the health risks of asbestos exposure were known, many buildings and other products still contain asbestos. Today, people who have been exposed to asbestos either in their homes, at work, or in another location continue to develop mesothelioma, a cancer that causes dozens of deaths every year.
Industries/Occupations Most Affected by Mesothelioma Deaths
A large percentage of Kentucky's GDP is earned through its industrial products, including transportation equipment, electric devices, chemical products, and machinery. Unfortunately, according to a Center for Disease Control's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health report, the industrial, chemicals, electric, and construction industries were linked to the highest malignant mesothelioma death rates in 1999. It has long been known that asbestos was a commonly used material in car, fireproofing, and other products used in these trades.
