Maryland Asbestos Information

The State of Maryland is home to many industries that have made use of asbestos materials in the past. Due to this fact, Maryland has a high number of reported mesothelioma and asbestos exposure cases relative to other states. In fact, the federal government has designated several Maryland sites as asbestos "hotspots." These sites received and processed many thousands of tons of vermiculite from one source in Libby, Montana. The vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos.

The asbestos-contaminated material came from the W.R. Grace vermiculite mine. The raw vermiculite was typically processed at facilities using a technique called exfoliation. When subjected to intense heat the vermiculite "popped" into thin mineral strands, which also released asbestos fibers into the air. Asbestos dust was prevalent throughout the processing facilities, and airborne particles pervaded surrounding areas.

Most of the contaminated vermiculite shipped to Maryland from the Libby mine was received and processed at a site in Beltsville. The W.R. Grace/Zonolite Company had its own facility there, which received over 700 shipments and processed over 65,000 tons of vermiculite between 1948 and 1993. As a result, people who lived or worked in Beltsville, Maryland during this period are considered to be at a much higher risk for mesothelioma and asbestosis than the population at large. A significant quantity of asbestos contaminated vermiculite was also shipped to several locations in Baltimore, Maryland.
