Minnesota Mesothelioma Information

Minnesota is the 12 th largest state in the United States and ranks 21 st in terms of population, with about 5,132,799 residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2005 estimate. The state has a number of strong industries, including forestry, which includes pulp processing and paper production; mining, which includes taconite mining and vermiculite processing; the production of electricity at power plants; construction; and auto repair. Unfortunately, employment in these fields has been associated with certain health problems due to the risk of asbestos exposure.

The Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

By the 1970s, a number of published health studies linked asbestos exposure with mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a membrane that lines the abdomen, chest, and heart. Mesothelioma has a long latency period, in rare cases it has been diagnosed 10 to 15 years after asbestos exposure occurred. Typically, it is 20 to 40-plus years before the disease is diagnosed. Sadly, by the time mesothelioma is diagnosed, the disease has usually progressed to the latter stages of development. Most victims are given poor prognosis.

Mesothelioma Deaths in Minnesota

In 1999, Minnesota had the 13th highest number of mesothelioma deaths according to the National Center for Health Statistics' cause of death data. The statistics showed that 61 people died of mesothelioma that year. Additionally, Ramsey County ranked in the top 50 counties that had the highest rates of mesothelioma deaths, with nine Ramsey County residents dying of mesothelioma in 1999. Because many employers knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure, but did not take action to safeguard the health of their employees, victims of mesothelioma can seek damages from the negligent parties.
