Missouri Mesothelioma Information

Missouri has a diverse array of industries, including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. While agriculture is declining somewhat in importance, Missouri still has the second most farms of any state in the U.S. Missouri mines produce 90 percent of the country's lead. Coal, zinc, and limestone are also mined extensively. The state manufactures aerospace apparatus, transportation equipment, machinery, chemicals, metals, electronics, and food products. Many of these industries have been associated with asbestos exposure in the past. Asbestos was commonly used in many industrial applications because of its tensile strength, insulating properties, and resistance to heat and chemicals. Some Missouri employers did not take adequate measures to protect employees from asbestos in the workplace. Individuals who inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers many years ago currently have a greatly increased risk for developing mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis. These diseases can take decades to develop, and more victims continue to emerge.

Between 1979 and 2001, at least 618 people in Missouri died from mesothelioma or asbestosis, according to federal government death certificate records. This number does not include deaths from lung cancer caused by asbestos, despite national estimates that 5,000 to 10,000 die from this cause each year. The federal government did not officially track mesothelioma until 1999, at which point the number of deaths attributed to the disease each year more than doubled. Mesothelioma was often misdiagnosed in the past, and the actual number of deaths due to this disease is likely much greater than reported.
