New Jersey Mesothelioma Information

The State of New Jersey is the fifth smallest in the US, but what it lacks in geographical size, the " Garden State" makes up for in industry. The most densely populated state in the union, New Jersey has a strong industrial tradition. A host of companies manufacture chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machinery, electronic equipment, printed materials, and processed foods. New Jersey has an extensive transportation system, and many products are moved through its network of roads, railways, airports, and seaports. With all of this industrial activity, however, there is often a price. New Jersey ranks sixth in asbestos-related deaths from asbestosisand mesothelioma.

According to federal government statistics, at least 2,775 New Jersey residents died from mesothelioma or asbestosis between 1979 and 2001. This figure does not include deaths from asbestos-related lung cancer, although it is estimated that thousands of people nationwide died from this disease. Furthermore, the number of mesothelioma deaths was likely much higher than reported, because mesothelioma is often misdiagnosed and wasn't federally tracked as a cause of death until 1999.

Dr. Michael Berry, a scientist working at the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, published a mesothelioma study in 1997. Dr. Berry's study examined the incidence of mesothelioma in residents who lived in near the largest asbestos manufacturing plant in North America. The plant in question was located in Manville, New Jersey, in Somerset County. Not counting plant employees, Berry discovered that residents of Manville were over ten times more likely to develop mesothelioma than New Jersey residents living outside of Somerset County. Residents of Somerset were about twice as likely to develop mesothelioma as other residents of New Jersey. Dr. Barry's research demonstrates that airborne asbestos increases mesothelioma rates in nearby communities.
