North Carolina Asbestos Information

The State of North Carolina is ranked thirteenth in the nation in terms of deaths caused by asbestos exposure. This is largely due to the state's relatively large population and the presence of industries that have been traditionally associated with asbestos. Many North Carolina residents have also been employed as construction workers, electricians, plumbers, and in other trades that can entail exposure to asbestos. These occupations have been linked to an increased risk of developing diseases like mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis.

The federal government is conducting an investigation into the actions of a company that shipped asbestos-contaminated material to various locations all over the United States, including North Carolina. Between 1948 and 1993, the W.R. Grace Company transported over ten thousand tons of asbestos-laden vermiculite ore to High Point, NC. It has been shown that the method used to process the raw vermiculite released copious quantities of asbestos fibers into the air. The microscopic asbestos dust floated around processing facilities and may have drifted into nearby communities. Individuals who worked at or lived near this vermiculite processing facility may have been exposed to these airborne asbestos fibers.
