Ohio Mesothelioma Information

The State of Ohio has a blue-collar image that dates back to the days when heavy industry dominated the economy. Now at the center of the so-called "Rust Belt," Ohio has suffered from the progressive decline in U.S. manufacturing since the late 1960s. Despite the slowdown, heavy industry is still a major contributor to Ohio's economy. Some of the state's manufactures include machinery, transportation equipment, rubber products, metal products, electronics, and processed foods. Ohio is also among the nation's leaders in mining lime, clay, and salt. While such industries have been critical to Ohio's livelihood, the pervasiveness of heavy industry does not come without a price.

Asbestos Exposure in Ohio

Many workers have been exposed to hazardous materials that can cause occupational diseases. Asbestos is one carcinogenic substance that was commonly used in industrial applications. Unfortunately, many companies failed to adequately protect workers from asbestos exposure in years past. As a result, individuals continue to be diagnosed with such asbestos-related diseases as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis decades after their initial exposure.

Ohio Asbestos-related Deaths

According to federal government records, at least 1,609 people in Ohio died from mesothelioma or asbestosis between 1979 and 2001. This number was derived from the causes of death recorded on death certificates, which are reported to the federal government for tracking purposes. The total does not include deaths from lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Some analysts estimate that 5,000 to 10,000 people per year die from asbestos-related lung cancer nationwide. Furthermore, mesothelioma was frequently misdiagnosed in past decades, and other causes were often recorded on death certificates. The disease was not even officially tracked by the federal government until 1999, at which point reported mesothelioma deaths more than doubled. In short, it is likely that the number of deaths caused by asbestos is much higher than has been reported.
