Oklahoma Asbestos and Mesothelioma
According to a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 2,704 people died of malignant mesothelioma in 2005. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can affect the lining of the lungs, heart, or stomach. It is caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring fiber that was commonly used in many products before the EPA banned its use in the 1970s.
Industries/Occupations Most Affected by Mesothelioma Deaths
According to a 1999 report on malignant mesothelioma in the Unites States, the Center for Disease Control found that the industries or jobs associated with the highest mortality rates include those who work in the electric light and power and construction fields; in the production of natural gas, transportation equipment, air conditioning units; and as elementary school teachers. A significant portion of Oklahoma's workforce is employed in these trades.

Malignant Mesothelioma Deaths in Oklahoma
In 1999, 22 people in Oklahoma died of malignant mesothelioma, according to a National Center for Health Statistics report; according to the NCHS, each of these victims lost 11.9 years of their lives to the disease.
