Virginia Mesothelioma Information
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Virginia is the country's 12th most populated state with more than seven million residents. Tragically, many workers at Virginia's shipyards, power plants, and construction sites have been exposed to asbestos and diagnosed with mesothelioma. Many of the companies that manufactured, sold, or installed asbestos products did so despite knowledge of its deadly hazards. Further, these companies failed to warn or protect their workers.
According to a study conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, 75 people died of mesothelioma in Virginia in 1999. Furthermore, the study found that, among residents aged 15 and over, Suffolk and Hampton, Virginia ranked number one and two in the nation for mesothelioma mortality rate. According to the study, in 1999, five deaths resulted from malignant mesothelioma in Suffolk and another nine in Hampton.
