Washington Mesothelioma Information

Washington State is the 15th largest state in the US in terms of population. Washington ranks eighth, however, in the number of deaths caused by asbestos (from 1979 through 2001). This statistic includes deaths from both asbestosis and mesothelioma. The high rate is likely due to the nature of some industries prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. Washington has numerous shipyards based in the Puget Sound, lumber mills, pulp factories, chemical plants, oil refineries, and aluminum mills. Many of these industries have been known to make use of asbestos materials. Workers in such industries often have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma.

Between 1979 and 2001, at least 1,730 people in Washington State died from asbestosis or mesothelioma (reported to the federal government as the cause of death). The actual number of asbestos related deaths is likely much higher, however, as this figure does not include deaths from lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Furthermore, the federal government did not even start tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.

If your loved one has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, a Washington mesothelioma lawyer can help.
