Mesothelioma Statistics
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Although it is the rarest of the asbestos exposure-related illnesses, which include asbestosis and lung cancer, mesothelioma is also the most serious. According to the American Cancer Society, 2,000 to 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the United States each year, and the average survival time after being diagnosed with mesothelioma is approximately one year.
Age, Gender, Race, and Mesothelioma
The diagnosis of mesothelioma in individuals under age 55 is rare. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that seventy-five percent of people with mesothelioma are over the age of 65. Mesothelioma is also less common in women than in men, who are at least five times more likely to develop the disease. The ACS also reports that mesothelioma is more prevalent in white Americans than in African Americans.
Occupation and Mesothelioma
The National Center for Health Statistics reported the industries that in 1999 had the highest death rates for mesothelioma:
- Construction – 14.2 %
- Non-paid workers, workers at home – 7.0 %
- Elementary and secondary school teachers – 3.7 %
- Industrial and miscellaneous chemicals – 3.5 %
- General government work – 2.4 %
- Agriculture – 1.9 %
- Nonspecific manufacturing 1.9 %
- Electric light and power – 1.9 %
- Railroads – 1.7 %
- Hospitals – 1.7 %
- Unreported industries – 4.3 %
- All other industries combined – 56 %
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 10 to 15 percent of American schools contain asbestos insulation. This may account for he high mortality rate of elementary and secondary school teachers from mesothelioma.
