California DUI Statistics

Traffic fatalities in California caused by driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs have risen sharply in recent years, while those caused by alcohol have increased at a much slower pace. Annual DUI arrest numbers have changed very little, when compared to the increased number of vehicles on the road.

In a Department of Motor Vehicles report covering the period from 1997 to 2007, drug-involved traffic fatalities very nearly tripled, from 253 in 1997 to 749 in 2007. Alcohol-involved fatalities went from 1,100 in 1997 to 1,489 in 2007.

DUI Arrest Numbers Up, Rate Down

Arrests for DUI fluctuated during the ten-year period, ending higher. Arrests per 100,000 licensed drivers, which takes into account the increased driver population, actually ended down a bit.

The conviction rate for DUI began and ended the period at 75 percent, after gradually rising, then gradually falling back. The reckless driving conditions rate also fluctuated up and down, starting at 8.8 percent in 1997 and ending at 7.4 percent in 2007.

California law has no tolerance for underage drinkers who drive. Anyone under 21 caught driving with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.01 percent will face immediate suspension or revocation of driving privileges. The legal limit for drivers 21 and older is 0.08 percent.

Ignition Lock Required for Repeat Offenders

Repeat DUI offenders in California are required to have an ignition interlock device (IID) installed in their cars. Offenders must pay for installation, monthly rental and servicing of the device, which requires a driver to pass a BAC breath test before the car will start.

Consult a DUI Lawyer

If you have been arrested for DUI, you need the help of an experienced attorney. Suspension or revocation of your license makes it difficult to get to work and earn a living. Installing, renting and maintaining an IID is costly. The right attorney will see that you have every legal advantage you deserve.
