Texas DUI Statistics
Arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) declined slightly in Texas in 2008, compared to the previous year. When adjustments are made for population change, the picture is even better, according to Crime in Texas, an annual report from the state's Department of Public Safety (DPS).
DUI arrests in 2008 numbered 94,248, down 0.4 percent, according to the report, which does not give a number for 2007. Likewise, there is no number for the 2007 arrest rate, but the report said the 2008 rate was down by 2.1 percent, at 387.4 arrests per 100,000 residents. The age group from 20 to 24 years experienced the highest number of arrests.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) publishes figures on traffic crashes involving DUI. Of the 3,468 people killed in all crashes in 2008, 975, just over 28 percent, died in DUI crashes. Not surprisingly, the most dangerous time of day for DUI crashes was the first hour after bars close, 2:00 to 2:59 a.m. The most dangerous day was Saturday.
Closely paralleling the results of the DPS, TxDOT figures show the 21 to 25 year age group as having the highest number of DUI drivers in fatal crashes.
A repeat DUI offender in Texas is required to have an ignition interlock device (IID) installed in his or her car as a condition of having driving privileges restored. There is an installation fee, as well as monthly rental and a fee for periodic servicing.
