Brain injury statistics are staggering. Millions of Amercians suffer some form of brain injury each year, whether due to an auto accident, trucking accident, workplace accident, medical malpractice, birth injury, or other manifestation of negligence. The Center for Disease Control reports the following brain injury statistics:
Causes of Brain Injuries
Between 1995 and 2001, the following were causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBI):
- Slip-and-fall accidents – 28 percent
- Motor vehicle traffic – 20 percent
- Impact by or against an object – 19 percent
- Assault – 11 percent
- Unknown cause – 9 percent
- Pedal cycle incidents – 3 percent
- Incidents with other forms of transportation – 2 percent
Incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury
In the U.S., at least 5.3 million people are living with a long-term or lifelong disability related to brain injury. Of the 1.4 million people who sustain a traumatic brain injury each year,
- 35,000 are hospitalized.
- An estimated 40 percent of these patients could or did not receive needed care (e.g., services to improve memory, problem solving, coping, emotional management, and job skills) one year after their injury occurred.
- 1.1 million are treated in an emergency department.
- 50,000 die.
At-risk Groups for Traumatic Brain Injury
Those most at risk for a traumatic brain injury are:
- Males (1.5 times more at risk than females)
- Children (age 0 to 4) and adolescents (age 15 to 19)
- Members of the armed forces
