Mirapex

The Food and Drug Administration approved Mirapex in 1997 for the treatment of restless legs syndrome and Parkinson's disease. Since then, the FDA has received dozens of reports from patients who say they developed serious compulsive behavior problems.

Mirapex Side Effects

A study published in the academic journal Neurology and a study conducted by researchers of the Mayo Clinic have linked use of dopamine agonists such as Mirapex in Parkinson's patients with a higher rate of compulsive behavioral problems. Dopamine agonists affect the area of the brain that controls a person's mood, behavior, and rewards. Researchers theorize that Parkinson's patients' biochemical reaction to dopamine agonists may cause compulsive behaviors such as uncontrollable addiction to:

  • Gambling
  • Sex
  • Eating
  • Shopping

The development of pathological behaviors is most likely to occur in Parkinson's patients over the age of 65 who are taking Mirapex.

FDA Warnings

In response to the reports of adverse health effects associated with Mirapex use, the FDA required the manufacturer and distributor of Mirapex, Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, to update the drug's safety label. It now warns patients about the potential link between Mirapex use and compulsive behaviors.

Consult a Mirapex Attorney

In 2008, a Milwaukee man obtained an $8.2 million settlement for his Mirapex lawsuit. The man became addicted to gambling after using Mirapex.

If you or a loved one has developed a compulsive behavioral problem following Mirapex use, consult a lawyer as soon as possible for a review of your case. You may be eligible for compensation; however, there are strict deadlines plaintiffs must meet when filing dangerous drug lawsuits. Speak to a Mirapex attorney who can help you file your suit on time.
