Yasmin/Yaz Birth Control Lawsuits
Several lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of the popular contraceptive pills Yasmin and Yaz. Yasmin has been on the market since 2001 and is an older version of Yaz, which was introduced to the market in 2006. Both are indicated in preventing pregnancy and treating some of the emotional and physical symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
There are currently dozens of Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits pending against Bayer Pharmaceuticals and its subsidiary Berlex, alleging the drug makers were negligent in developing a dangerous drug and failed to warn consumers about the potential risks of use.
Dangerous Side Effects
Women that have taken Yasmin or Yaz for a period of one year or longer are reporting serious side effects, including:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Gallbladder disease
- Sudden death
Yasmin and Yaz contain drospirenone, a synthetic progestin that increases potassium levels in the body. Elevated potassium levels, or hyperkalemia, can cause heart problems and other adverse side effects. There are other oral contraceptives on the market that do not contain drospirenone and instead use other progestins to prevent pregnancy.
