Yasmin Dangers and Side Effects

Yasmin is a prescription oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin stops ovulation, alters the cervical mucus, and changes the lining of the uterus. There are also "off-label" uses of Yasmin that include treating heavy menstrual bleeding, painful menstrual periods, irregular menstrual periods, acne, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, as with any medication, dangerous side effects are possible.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Yasmin are typically mild and easily treated. Common side effects include headaches, menstrual changes or problems, breast pain, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, vaginal discharge, flu-like symptoms, such as fever or chills, acne, vaginal yeast infections, diarrhea, and back pain.

Dangerous Side Effects

Some more dangerous side effects of Yasmin are potentially serious and should be reported immediately. Dangerous side effects include

  • hyperkalemia (high blood potassium)
  • Signs of blood clotting in the leg such as pain in the calf, let gramps, or leg or foot swelling
  • Signs of blood clot in the lung such as shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, or coughing up blood
  • Chest pain or heaviness, which may be signs of a heart attack
  • Sudden loss of vision or vision changes, which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye
  • Signs of a stroke such as vision or speech changes, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, or severe headache
  • Signs of liver damage such as yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin, dark urine, upper-right abdominal pain
  • Depression or other emotional changes
  • Migraines
  • Breast lumps
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding that does not improve within a few months of starting Yasmin
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as an unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
