North Carolina Auto Accident Statistics
A total of 220,224 auto accidents were reported in North Carolina in 2006, according the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The North Carolina 2006 Traffic Crash Facts Book is the most recent report published on the NCDOT's website. Almost 120,000 people were injured and more than 1,500 were killed in these accidents. NCDOT lists speeding as the most common driving violation that led to fatal car accidents.
Deaths and Injuries Caused by Car Accidents
While the number of deaths caused by auto accidents has not seen any significant increases or decreases over a recent five-year period, the number of injuries caused by car accidents decreased steadily from 2003 to 2006.

Auto Accidents and Gender
The NCDOT includes information about the gender of driver involved in the majority of fatal and injury crashes. According to NCDOT:
- Men were involved in a total of 203,356 crashes, 1,477 caused fatalities and 72,229 caused injuries
- Women were involved in a total of 159,752 crashes, 596 caused fatalities and 61,022 caused injuries

According to NCDOT, vehicles in the passenger car and sport utility categories were involved in the most auto accidents.
