Arizona Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle crash fatalities in Arizona rose at a slower rate than motorcycle registrations over the five-year period from 2004 to 2008, according to Arizona Motor Vehicle Crash Facts 2008, published by the state's Department of Transportation (ADOT). In 2004, the ratio of fatalities to registrations was 1.16 percent; in 2008, 0.91 percent.

The only increase in the state's motorcycle fatalities-to- registration ratio was from 2004 to 2005, when the rate was 1.26 percent. The rate for 2006 was 1.19 percent; for 2007, 0.95 percent.

Motorcyclists Fare Slightly Better than Average in 2008

Figures for 2008 show motorcycles accounting for 3,632 of the 119,588 total crashes, or 3.04 percent. Motorcycle registrations accounted for 154,536 of the state's 4,842,188 total, or 3.19 percent. Crashes per registered motorcycle were 2.35 percent, slightly below the overall 2.47 percent ratio.

Of the 3,632 motorcycle crashes in 2008, 145 were fatality crashes, 2,843 were non-fatal injury crashes, and 644 were property-damage-only crashes. Just over half the crashes, 1,853, were with other vehicles.

The ADOT report includes a section listing the types of motorcyclist error that led to crashes. Perhaps not surprisingly, speeding is listed in 1,000 incidents.

Figures Contradict Public Perception

What may be a surprise to some, and a contradiction of the general public perception of motorcyclists, is the listing of "no improper driving" in 1,517 of the 3,632 crashes. Police accident reports show that many drivers aren't aware of motorcycles until it's too late to avoid an accident. One of the most dangerous maneuvers for a motorcyclist is simply going through an intersection, where drivers often turn left in front of an oncoming motorcycle.
